How to identify an autograph from a photo
A good identification starts with more than handwriting. The item, date, provenance, and signature style all add context.
1. Photograph the entire item
Take one well-lit photo showing the autograph and the object it is on. A baseball, trading card, jersey, photograph, and document each carry different clues. Avoid glare, filters, and heavy cropping.
2. Capture a close-up
Add a sharp close-up where letter shapes, spacing, flourishes, and the direction of the strokes are visible. Put the item on a plain surface and keep the camera parallel to it.
3. Record the provenance
Write down where the item came from, when it was signed if known, and whether there is a certificate or receipt. Provenance does not prove a signature, but it helps researchers assess the story around it.
4. Compare multiple exemplars
Compare the autograph with several trusted examples from a similar period. Signatures naturally vary, so one matching or mismatching letter should not decide the result by itself.
5. Use AI as a research assistant
Autograph Identifier AI can organize a first-pass opinion about likely identity, warning signs, and a rough value range from your photo. Treat the result as a research starting point, especially for valuable pieces.
